Plus Size Lolita Buying Guide

Last update 3/12/10

Due to the recent influx of the same question over and over (I am x size, where can I buy lolita clothes?) I have decided to write up a quick guide answering said question once and for all.

Notes:
- Most of these measurements are rough estimates and DO NOT apply for all garments from mentioned brands. Be sure to check that what you are buying is a piece that falls under the right sizing. Also note that the "up to" measurement is usually the MAX measurement and will either be incredibly tight and/or won't look good.

- This is not a brand list. Not every lolita brand, Japanese or otherwise, is going to be on here. I'll only include brands that have a trend of selling larger clothing than Japanese standard sizes.

- I worked hard on this list. Updating it alone took over four hours. If reposting it elsewhere, please give credit where credit is due.

I don't think I'll ever own a brand jsk now ;___;

I'm sort of curious though, how do the skirts fare for btssb, IW, and Meta?

[info]toujourspret

June 12 2008, 03:42:47 UTC 3 years ago

Skirts are almost universally worse than JSKs, actually. I think Meta's the best for skirts, followed by IW, but baby's skirts are just not happening for most of us.

I think you shouldn't say $10 HKD on average since that isn't accurate at all. $10 USD would be!

I got a blouse done at my measurements (only 4 inches more than the top) and it was $70HKD, and skirts seem to be a bit less but still way over $10HKD. Fro a dress I think it was $100HKD more.

Ok, thank you! I must have misread that info somewhere. I'll change it ^^

For AP I know that the fully back shirred JSK's can fit 107-ish cm. And most h.NAOTO size L/XL can fit around a 106cm bust. I've recently found out that Baby cutsews can be surpizingly strechy and fit up to about a 44inch bust. (Like this one: http://www.babyssb.co.jp/shopping/cutsaw/132717.html And I forgot what that measurement is in cm) h.NAOTO hoodies tend to have a bit of strech in them too.

My main suggestion is to aim for things with all shirring or, like with Baby and AP, full back shirring.

what about the back panel shirring jumperskirts (not fully back shirred) from IW? i hear mixed things about them. if i can fit into the back panel shirring ones from baby, do you think i would fit into the ones from IW as well?

[info]cheri_claire

June 12 2008, 07:02:19 UTC 3 years ago

I only have fully back shirred ones, but IW Shirring is really tight and strong in general. Maybe if you change the elastic or something.

Thank you for doing this, I am sure it will be really helpful from now on!

[info]bucktick

June 12 2008, 07:44:50 UTC 3 years ago

both IW and MAM offer "L size" although their "L" is less roomy than babys or meta's tall size. It's worth mentioning. MA/MAM cutsews and sweaters are rather generously sized.

Putumayo isn't on the list. Putumayo always looks promising because most of their skirts are elastic waist but in my experience they are not sized generously and the max waist tends to be the max hips.

Gaaah just say that full shirring = 52" so people will quit asking stupid questions about whether the measurements on xx dress are accurate.

Thanks a lot!
I guess it won't cut down all of the questions, but if it avoids half of them it's a vast improvement. ^^

Btw: I own a h.naoto skirt that would easily stretch up to 110cm/43".

[info]silver_youko

June 12 2008, 14:11:25 UTC 3 years ago

I'm hoping that's what'll happen anyway. Let's see.
And I took an educated guess on the h.naoto skirts, so thanks for that!

Unless you can give me how large they can sometimes run, as I can find almost no sizing info on the site and most brands underestimate their stretch anyway, I'm not planning on putting them up there.
I really only managed to find info for one of their petticoats, and it says the elastic waist only goes up to 24", hardly plus sized.
Thank you though.

I think I inquired Sweet Rococo on their custom sizing and either they didn't do it or it only when up to a certain measurement and that was still too small for me....sorry that I can't rememeber which it was.

thanks so much for making this!
I've also been wondering about dress styles
http://lolitafashion.org/dress_styles.php
other than stuff with shirring and how flattering if at all they are on plus sized lolis. I have been thinking about getting a dress comissioned in something other than shirred to have something else, but am really unsure of spending money on something that will look bad on me. have you seen any guidelines for that?

[info]silver_youko

June 12 2008, 16:42:52 UTC 3 years ago

I haven't seen any, but I've been thinking of also making a guide like that for a while now (this one was just a spur-of-the-moment type thing)
Maybe I'll get around to typing something along those lines up soon.

June 10 2010, 05:08:14 UTC 1 year ago

Just wondering - as I can't find anywhere that this is answered clearly... the measurements on Brand websites:

Are they taking the measurements as "FLAT GARMENT" or a circumference total? Some have told me (for example) that BABY uses flat measure, and some say circumference total. Very confused...I have to believe that they standardize it and not flip between 2 methods.

BTW - as a side note to add on Bodyline. They don't mention it on the website - but the measurements are a flat garment measure.

[info]silver_youko

June 10 2010, 14:07:44 UTC 1 year ago

I would assume circumference just because it's more accurate, but I think the only way to truly know is to email brands and ask. Also, unless it's for dresses with no shirring it doesn't really seem to matter because for the shirred pieces they never seem to list the true max.

For example this jsk http://www.babyssb.co.jp/shopping/jumper/134229.html
is listed as 108cm the max, when we know it can go much larger.

A note about Ergi by Piratessan: All items (except for t-shirts, socks and headdresses) are available in custom sizes. ^__^ Usually there's an extra fee for custom sizing at about SEK 200 (USD 27) Some items can be ordered custom size for free, like the bloomers and the Helena dress.

I was looking around Excentrique's website, and they seem to have a lot of stuff that may work for plus sizes, according to the measurements, especially the skirts.

Some examples:

http://excentrique.shop7.makeshop.jp/shopdetail/006000000201/order/ This is listed with a maximum waist of "64cm ~ 120cm"

http://excentrique.shop7.makeshop.jp/shopdetail/006000000198/order/ This one is at 64cm ~ 102cm for the waist

http://excentrique.shop7.makeshop.jp/shopdetail/006000000217/order/ This dress 109.4cm bust/88cm waist

http://excentrique.shop7.makeshop.jp/shopdetail/006000000179/order/ These bloomers seem to have pretty generous measurements (and uh..can also be transformed into a bolero?)

There's more on their site, but I've never bought or worn any of their stuff though, so I don't know how their stuff would really fit.

Hi! Thought I'd mention that my brand Morrigan New York (morrigannyc.com) has standard sizing for all of our skirts up to a 44" waist (hips measurement free obviously :). I'm also producing a dress just now that will come in plus sizes (specific measurements to be determined, as it's still in development).
